Pore segmentation and quantification on a 3D volume

PoreAnalysis This example demonstrates how to use a set of ImageViz engines in order to analyze pores from a digital rock dataset.

DESCRIPTION:

This example illustrates how a standard image processing workflow can be implemented for analysing pores in a digital rock sample. Each step is applied from loading a grayscale image to displaying results of the analysis.

All parameters of the workflow engines are exposed in the user interface, the user can change the parameters and verify the result on the output image.

The pore count and phase fraction are displayed in the output console. An individual measurement of volume and diameter is displayed in a spreadsheet for each pore.

The workflow is made up of three main steps:

• Pre-processing
  • input image denoising with SoBilateralFilterProcessing.
• Segmentation
  • initialization of high and low level markers with SoThresholdingProcessing,
  • merge of both marker images in a label image with SoAddObjectToLabelProcessing,
  • creation of a relief map image with SoGradientOperatorProcessing3d,
  • detection of pores boundaries with SoMarkerBasedWatershedProcessing,
  • elimination of incomplete objects, since connected to image borders, with SoFillHolesProcessing2d,
  • pores labelization with SoLabelingProcessing engine.
• Analysis
  • counting the number of pores with SoObjectCountQuantification,
  • computation of the pore volume fraction with SoIntensityIntegralQuantification3d,
  • measurement of equivalent diameters and volumes of pores with SoLabelAnalysisQuantification.
